The entertainment industry is mourning the loss of a true hero. Michael Newman, who portrayed lifeguard Mike “Newmie” Newman on the iconic television series “Baywatch,” has passed away at the age of 68. His death follows an 18-year battle with Parkinson’s disease, a challenge he faced with remarkable strength and grace.
The sad news was confirmed on Tuesday by Newman’s close friend, Matt Felker, who recently directed a Hulu docuseries about the legendary show. Newman died on Sunday evening due to heart complications, surrounded by his loving family and friends. “I got to see Mike the last time he was conscious, and he looked at me and, in typical Mike fashion, said, ‘You’re just in time,’” Felker shared, highlighting the warmth and humor that defined Newman’s character.
Newman was not only a familiar face on “Baywatch,” where he appeared in 150 episodes, but he was also the only cast member who was a real-life lifeguard. His commitment to saving lives extended beyond the show, as he worked as a full-time firefighter while filming. After “Baywatch” ended in 2001, he continued to serve as a firefighter for another 25 years, demonstrating that his heroism was not just confined to the small screen.
In 2006, Newman was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at the age of 50. His courageous journey with the illness was featured in the docuseries “After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun,” which explored the lives of the cast after their time on the beloved show. Reflecting on his diagnosis, Newman remarked, “This terminal disease has allowed me a lot of thinking time, which I maybe didn’t want, but it’s brought me wisdom.” His candid acknowledgment of the challenges he faced resonated deeply with those who admired his spirit.
Despite the struggles of living with Parkinson’s, Newman remained optimistic and focused on the important things in life. “I am cherishing the days that I get to be on this earth with family and friends,” he said. He often lived by the mantra, “It’s not a run-through,” reminding himself and others to make the most of every moment.
In his later years, Newman dedicated himself to raising funds for Parkinson’s research through the Michael J. Fox Foundation, emphasizing his commitment to helping others even as he faced his own challenges. His insights about the difficulties of working in Hollywood were poignant; he stated, “You don’t realize how hard it is to look natural in front of the lens… Let’s be honest … there’s not too many actors that have survived the years of working in Hollywood.”
Michael Newman leaves behind a loving family, including his wife of 36 years, Sarah, their children Chris and Emily, and their 1-year-old granddaughter, Charlie. His legacy of service, both as a firefighter and a lifeguard, serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have on the lives of many.
