On Kevin’s tenth birthday, the Forger family’s home was a vibrant hub of celebration. The house was adorned with colorful balloons and streamers, while the aroma of freshly baked cookies and savory appetizers wafted through the air. Peter greeted guests at the front door with a broad smile, while Chelsea put the final touches on Kevin’s birthday cake, which was decorated with ten candles and toy cars, his favorite.
As friends and family arrived, the party atmosphere was filled with laughter and excitement. The kids were entertained by a clown in the backyard, performing magic tricks and making balloon animals. Inside, the adults chatted and enjoyed cocktails, marveling at the beautiful decorations and the Forger family’s seemingly perfect life.
When it was time for Kevin to blow out the candles, all eyes were on him. Chelsea encouraged him, saying, “Close your eyes, make a wish, and then blow out the candles.” Kevin’s face showed signs of distress. He struggled to keep his eyes shut, glancing around the room as if searching for reassurance. Finally, with a deep breath, he wished loudly, “I wish my parents wouldn’t split up!” and blew out the candles in one breath.

A hush fell over the room as Kevin’s wish hung in the air. The guests exchanged confused and concerned glances, their smiles fading. The perfect image of the Forger family seemed to crumble in an instant. Chelsea and Peter quickly led Kevin away from the prying eyes of their guests, trying to calm him down.
In the kitchen, Chelsea knelt before Kevin, her heart heavy with concern. “Honey, why did you make that wish? Why do you think your dad and I are going to split up?” she asked gently. Kevin looked down, his eyes filled with uncertainty and fear. Before he could respond, Peter intervened, trying to reassure Kevin. “Sweetheart, don’t worry. He just wants us to always be together. He’s just a kid.”
Chelsea’s worry deepened as she glanced at Peter. “Is there something going on that I don’t know about?” she asked, her voice tinged with suspicion. Peter shrugged off the question, insisting it was just a misunderstanding.
Determined to get to the bottom of things, Chelsea continued her search for Peter, who had mysteriously vanished. She found herself speaking with Paige, a friend, who noted the awkwardness and expressed concern. Chelsea confided that although there had been recent tensions between her and Peter, she hadn’t expected Kevin’s wish to be so revealing.
Chelsea decided to step outside to fetch some balloons she had left in the car. As she rummaged through the trunk, she overheard a conversation between Peter and her sister, Lucy. Her heart raced as she heard Lucy’s anxious voice saying, “He saw us yesterday.” Peter’s response was filled with guilt and denial. Chelsea’s blood ran cold as she realized the affair was the source of Kevin’s distress.
Furious and heartbroken, Chelsea confronted Peter and Lucy. “I heard everything,” she said, her voice trembling with rage. Peter’s attempt to explain was met with Chelsea’s final decision. “I don’t want to see either of you in my house ever again. Be gone in ten minutes,” she declared.
Peter’s pleas were ignored as Chelsea gathered the remaining guests and ended the party. As the guests left, murmuring words of sympathy, Chelsea held Kevin close, apologizing for the turmoil. “I’m sorry, honey. It seems not all wishes are meant to come true,” she said softly.
Kevin, though still upset, found comfort in his mother’s embrace. “The most important thing is that you’re here, Mom,” he whispered. Chelsea held him tightly, understanding that while the evening had unveiled painful truths, it also marked the beginning of a new chapter. With Kevin by her side, she felt ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
